LET'S DO RESORT

Down under, a bitter chill is beginning to bite through the air. Coats are being wrapped tighter and woollen scarves unravelled. Winter, regrettably, officially starts this Saturday.

So when the first of the Resort Wear collections popped up on Style.com, it was the mini (virtual) holiday escape I desperately needed. An escape to preppy cruise wear and Hamptons attire; summery florals and tropical prints. Yes, I wasn't going to the Bahamas, but I could still dream about what I would wear if I was, right?!

And gosh, from Oscar de la Renta's bubble dresses to Tory Burch's floral ensembles - this year's Resort Wear had me in a 'whisk-me-away-on-a-luxury-cruise-ASAP' state of mind. You know the one.

So with palm trees and Hampton-getaways on my mind, I present you with some of my favourite looks from the collections! Voilà! Xxx

SWEET 16 + AU REVOIR

Two things!

1. It was my birthday yesterday. My 'Sweet 16'! I was spoiled to bits by my friends, and had a lovely birthday dinner with family at Ebisu. Sixteen seems like such a good age to be... it seems as though only yesterday I was just an innocent tween on the brink of 'teenagedom'! Is 18 really only two years away?!

2. I'm going to Sydney! Bags are packed, flights booked, on-flight magazines at the ready. I'm literally typing this before rushing out the door! Mum and I are going for a long weekend as a special birthday treat. I'm veeeery excited to shop up a storm, dine out and visit all our old houses there! Sydney really is such an incredible city, and I can't wait to be back there.

SO if you do know any must-visit stores or places to eat in Sydney, please comment below! I would appreciate all your recommendations so much, and can't wait to try them out. Be sure to follow me on Instagram (@themodette) for my travel pics too!

See you all next week!
Lots of love, Kate

Trying to cram everything you want to do in Sydney into three days is like me owning a Valentino dress. It's never going to happen.

But in my birthday trip to the incredible Aussie city, we sure did try. From morning to night, we whipped around all those cafés, shops, beaches, harbours and restaurants faster than you could say 'G'DAY!'. All I can say is, thank God for a plush hotel bed and a flat screen TV at the end of a long day/night. Sydney, I heart you!

INTERVIEW: ERANDI GUTIÉRREZ

Forget mass-production and 'made in China', this label's handmade in Mexico... and with love! Say hello to Golden Ponies - the creation of Mexican designer, Erandi Gutiérrez. What began specialising in just Oxford shoes has now expanded to adorable ballet flats, boots, bags and clutches - all designed and made by Erandi herself. I spoke with the lovely and talented designer & founder, about her line, inspirations and favourite things. Enjoy! Xxx

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Erandi! Where are you and what are you doing right now?
Hi! I'm in my home/office in downtown Guadalajara. It's hot and after breakfast I'm keeping up with my emails.

How did you get into design?
Since I was young I've wanted to be a designer. I was and still am fascinated with design in general but mostly with fashion. I studied photography in art school and believe it or not I also studied for 4 years urbanistic; which is the study and planning of cities (a bit of architecture stuff) but it's not my thing, obviously. I used to bring my fashion magazines at school as reading material instead of any related books of my career and in my free time I was (still) always on the Internet looking for fashion, so finally I decide to quit urbanistic and started to learn how to sew and make clothes, because at the beginning I wanted to have a fashion line, but after a few textile projects I learned that making clothes wasn't my “thing” so I had the opportunity to make shoes and bags and after almost 4 years, I'm still on it and I love it!

What inspired you to start Golden Ponies?
Well, the main reason was that I couldn't find shoes or bags that I liked, because I have an obsession with the sixties and with vintage shoes. I knew that I could buy and find them on Etsy or Ebay but at the time I hadn't purchased anything on the Internet before, I didn't have a Paypal account and not to mention they were expensive to me. So I decided to make them for myself and all the girls in the world in the same situation as me - a good start thought.

Talk us through the design process.
It all begins with inspiration research, color palettes, shapes, trends, materials, leather swatches, etc. Then developing which designs, which kind of shoes/bags I want to make, buying leather and all the supplies, making patterns, samples, details, color combinations, production, sizes, etc... It's a long process but it's worth it at the end. I love every part of it, it's hard work and that's what I like.

How would you describe the Golden Ponies aesthetic in three words?
Girly, comfy and colorful.

What is your favourite piece you've designed?
I'm very proud of everything I've created so far but my favorite piece right now is the Mady bag.

Who are your style icons?
Francoise Hardy, Jane Birkin, Kirsten Dunst, Alexa Chung, Sofia Coppola, Valentine Fillol-Cordier, etc.

What are your five wardrobe essentials?
Ballet flats, jeans, leather jacket, black miniskirts and button-down shirts.

Describe your perfect day.
It should start with a good latte and a yummy breakfast with my boyfriend, then we take a walk with our dog, and in the afternoon we take beers with friends or stay at home to watch movies or our favorite TV shows. Or perhaps a day in Mexico City, my favorite.

Favourite quote?
“Get your shit together."
I'm kidding, I don't have one hehe.

Favourite film?
I have lots! But Virgin Suicides is my favorite since always.

What can we see next from Golden Ponies?
I hope lots of new things! Right now I'm about to show new summer bags, planning the Fall collection and also the third collection with Chica de Canela, with my lovely Spanish partner Lucia.

8 THINGS I LOVED ABOUT THE GREAT GATSBY

$
0
0

"New York, 1922. The tempo of the city had changed sharply, the buildings were higher, the parties were bigger, the morals were looser and the liquor was cheaper."

It took me ages to work out how to start this post. I mean, it's The Great Gatsby - and Gatsby takes on a vocabulary of its own. But DARLING THIS WAS SO FREAKING FABULOUS may encapsulate my feelings for it suitably. Because really, it was.

Don't be fooled by some of those critical reviews, because there is nothing not to love about Gatsby. The glamour, the extravagance (not to mention those INCREDIBLE parties - so very, very jealous).... it's all a dream world. One simply can't help falling in love with it all.

I saw the film last weekend, and I swear the whole time my mouth was open and eyes were fixated to the screen. At one point, I even had to restrain myself from jumping up and dancing in the aisle (this was in the scene of one of Gatsby's grand parties, of course). And because you should all know how fabulous it is too, here's a list of eight things I love about The Great Gatsby...... Xxx

1. The music
Don't deny it - the soundtrack is gold. And since it's edited by Jay Z (God), it's kind of expected. Lana del Rey, The XX, Kanye, Will.I.Am, Beyoncé..... I love how Baz Lurhmann incorporated modern day songs into the film, with very 1920s twists. Genius.

2. The costumes
The clothes alone make me want to travel back to the 1920s! So, so extravagant. I loved that Miuccia Prada designed over 40 of the costumes - a very stylish move on Lurhmann's part, I believe. You might have recognised Daisy's glittering 'chandelier dress' from Prada's SS10 collection - the dress is made of hundreds of hanging crystal droplets, connected by a series of tiny hoops. Yes, the costumes were definitely a highlight!

3. Leonardo DiCaprio
It's worth seeing the film just for Leo. He really is an amazing, amazing actor. I think he did a wonderful job transitioning from the mysterious-neighbour to the cool-guy-with-a-really-flash-car to the besotted-lover. He did really well in letting Gatsby's little bits of insecurity slip through his magical mask throughout too. Yep, big snaps for Leo!

4. New York City
The fact that it was set in such a cool city added major bonus points. If anything, you didn't get to see enough of New York in the '20s! Partying in an inner-city apartment, speeding over the Brooklyn Bridge and sneaking sublime views of the city was all cool cool cool.

5. The PARTIES
How can one forget all those extravagant parties??? Like I said, they made me want to jump up and start dancing in the aisles. Fortunately to save the embarrassment of my friends, I was able to restrain myself. But oh the MUSIC and the DANCING and the never ending flow of champagne and glamorous-looking people! Why can't all parties nowadays be like Gatsby's?!?!

6. The houses
Gagh, major, major envy for these people's homes. The mansions! The swimming pools! The gardens! The enormous gold gilded rooms! Can I please come and live in Gatsby's house now? Please?

7. Gatsby's undying love (swoon)
I've heard some people say that the whole love story thing is unbelievable. Half of me agrees and half of me disagrees. But all I can really think about is how ADORABLE Gatsby's undying love for Daisy is. Oh to be Daisy Buchanan. The way Gatsby would do absolutely anything for her (the flowers, the parties....), the way he stared into her eyes, what a gentleman he was to her..... you can tell I'm a romantic, can't you? Gatsby has raised my 'boyfriend standards' to sky high new levels. I won't settle for anything less than Gatsby.

8. Its uniqueness
You have to admit that this wasn't just like any other film. Even the filming technique was very modern and different to any other I had seen..... the visuals and characters almost looked fake, don't you think? At first, I wasn't so sure I liked it. But as it went on, I realised that it was actually very cool. Very 21st century. Thumbs up to Baz for doing something a little different!

And below, my favourite little clip of the film.......

Have you seen The Great Gatsby yet? What did you think? I really would love to hear all your comments and what you all thought of it!

Hello, hello! Though another dreary Monday looms undesirably on the horizon, stumbling across this beautiful editorial has kept my spirits high. Shot around the city of Salvador, Brazil, photographer Nicole Bentley captures the blonde Czech beauty, Denisa Dvorakova, donning the prettiest and most sexy lingerie-inspired pieces by the likes of Dion Lee, Zimmermann and Willow. I adore the rose-tinted filter of the photos, not to mention her tousled, side-swept hair..... so, so pretty!

MISS MODETTE: HANNAH ROSE YEE

Editor's Note: Introducing my very new series, Miss Modette! Each week, I'll be showcasing one of my favourite bloggers in a quick-fire question session about their favourite things and inspirations. Enjoy! And if you have a particular blogger in mind that you'd like me to interview, send me a message here. Xxx

As our very first Miss Modette, Hannah Rose Yee is 22, lives in Sydney and has an undeclared love for breakfast parties and 90s RnB. She's also the writer of one of my favourite blogs - the charming Capture the Castle. Filled with her lyrical writings, inspirations and fashion collection reviews, it's impossibly clear that Hannah has the most impeccable taste. And judging by her answers below (cropped cigarette pants, overalls....), my interview with her only proves that!

AGE:
22

CURRENTLY BASED:
Paddington, Sydney

IF I COULD HAVE ANYONE'S WARDROBE, IT WOULD BE:
Ashley Olsen. Any day, any time. Even - wait, especially - when she was 7 in 'It Takes Two' in overalls and plaid shirts.

SIGNATURE SCENT:
I oscillate between a few but my OG is Diptyque's Philosykos, with a bit of Serge Lutens' Five O'Clock Au Gingembre in the colder months.

FAVOURITE BOOK:
Too many. But if I had to give three... Persuasion by Jane Austen because it's perfect, A Room With A View by E.M Forster because it started the wanderlust and The White Album by Joan Didion because it changed everything.

FAVOURITE FILM:
Again... how could I ever try and narrow it down! I really love films. I love Lost in Translation, I love Out of Africa, I love You've Got Mail and I love lots of the ridiculously silly French comedies like 'Prete-moi ta main' and 'La Doublure', all for different reasons and all equally. I am also something of a 90s thriller buff. Start a conversation with me about Harrison Ford dancing to 'Wonderful World' in Witness and it may never stop.

5 WARDROBE ESSENTIALS:
A pair of black cropped cigarette pants
An oversized, well-loved, worn-in sweater
A too-big woolen coat with deep pockets and a big collar
A pair of Porselli ballet flats
A leather pouch bag that fits all your essentials (and fits into the pocket of your coat)

I wear a variation on this outfit - with or without the coat weather permitting - almost everyday. When I'm not wearing it I'm in overalls.

ESSENTIAL BEAUTY PRODUCT:
I love beauty products but I don't actually wear much to be honest. The two things I use the most are NARS sheer lip treatment, a slightly tinted lip balm that nourishes and gives a touch of colour, and Clarins Beauty Flash Balm, to add a little plump and brightness to skin.

SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME IS:
I love - and I mean really LOVE - 90s and 00s RnB.

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:
Suitably, a whole lot of Ashanti. (this is still an excellent song).

I WANT TO TRAVEL TO:
Sweden. Desperately.

FAVOURITE QUOTE:
"I've seen you beauty, and you belong to me now, whoever you are waiting for and if I never see you again, I thought. You belong to me and all Paris belongs to me and I belong to this notebook and this pencil." Ernest Hemingway, A Moveable Feast

TOP 3 FAVOURITE BLOGS & MAGAZINES:
My favourite blogs are the beautiful Badlands and Sweet Bird of Youth, just as wonderful in real life as they are online, and the impeccable lifestyle site Manger. For magazines I can't go past The Gentlewoman because it's practically perfect in every way, Elle UK - the best written commercial title in the world - and Kinfolk, for a little bit of dream-life inspiration.

WITH GRACE

In her (reluctant) claim to fame in The September Issue, Grace Coddington graced our screens as the feisty woman with the flaming red mane of hair and heated attitude to match. She was, of course, impossible to overlook - largely due to those locks, I suspect. Perhaps it was her 'no-bulls***' frame of mind or her dedication to her work as creative director of Vogue, but I took a certain liking to Coddington.... inevitably why her memoir - illustrations, cats and all - made for such a cherished birthday gift from friends. I adored it.

I dearly loved reading about Coddington's charming world - from her 1940s and 50s childhood in a small Welsh island, to carting round her own trunk of make-up and heated hair rollers as a model in the 'Swinging Sixties', and finally, to life in New York working at one of the world's most prestigious magazines. The writing style is just like Grace - witty, forthright and a little blunt. Her experiences are incredibly entertaining to read about..... She's met all the top photographers, models, designers and editors, travelled all over the world to exotic locations, and has a resumé of some of the most beautiful editorials. All expected from spending over fifty years in the fashion industry.

Alongside her quirky and renowned illustrations, Grace is an absolute treat to read. One that will remain on my bookshelf for many years to come, and will undoubtedly be flicked through over and over again......

"Is fashion art? I think it’s sometimes very creative, but I’m not sure I would call it art; that’s pushing it a bit. I certainly don’t think fashion photography is art, because if it is art, it’s probably not doing its job … In fashion photography, rule number one is to make the picture beautiful and lyrical or provocative and intellectual – but you still have to see the dress. Of course, I like to push the boundaries; I think that’s the most interesting element much of the time, when you walk the line. But you can’t forget to show the clothes and, in that end, not alter them beyond recognition; to pretend a dress is something it is not is unfair to the reader, too."
- Grace Coddington

Après Ski

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

.....And as mountain slopes dipped in powder snow & warm hot choccies by the fire call my name, I bid you all 'adieu!' I'm heading down south early, early tomorrow morning - with skis (unfortunately, they won't be Chanel like above) and suitable après ski-wear packed. Though I haven't hit the slopes in a few years now, I'm hoping it will somewhat come to me when I'm out on the snow..... I don't particularly want the ski patrol coming to my rescue when I've crashed into a pine tree! Have a wonderful week and see you all when I get back. I have some exciting things planned!

BEIGE IS NOT BORING

According to Mr. Big in my latest Sex & the City episode,
"Beige is bullshit".

But Mr. Big clearly did not see this jacket.
Or these shoes!

I was head over heels upon seeing this divine Dolce & Gabbana beauty.
That print, that collar, those ruffled sleeves and oversized buttons.....
Eek! *Gone to heaven*!

Wear it on its own as a dress, paired with simple nude heels. And prepare to look utterly fabulous.
Who said beige was boring?!

MISS MODETTE | NICOLA COOK

Sophisticated, chic and stylish - meet blogger Nicola Cook.

Some girls make 'effortless chic' look easy -- Nicola Cook is one of them.

Whilst tapping out answers to my questions, the Knock You For Six blogger is dressed in an American Apparel black mesh top tucked into high waisted shorts, paired with Sam Edelman sandals and a Stella McCartney python bag. Undoubtedly, the girl has style. And who - might I add - is also a fellow New Zealander! Two years ago though, Nicola spread her wings and moved to Hong Kong - a city which she describes as "such an exciting and diverse place to be living". There, Nicola works as a graphic designer designing sites such as for Ruby and Andrea Biani, as well as posting her inspirations and more on KYF6.

Below, I chatted with the incredibly stylish Nicola (and in my opinion, model-in-the-making!) about her favourite things and more....

AGE:
27

CURRENTLY BASED:
Hong Kong

IF I COULD HAVE ANYONE'S WARDROBE, IT WOULD BE:
Elin Kling's understated but modern style is eternally cool. Her outfits from 4 years ago still look fresh today.

SIGNATURE SCENT:
Byredo 'Bal D'Afrique'.

FAVOURITE BOOK:
'Anybody Out There?' by Marian Keyes got me through a really tough break-up. The book isn't really about relationships or break-ups but the story drew me in and distracted me from real life, so it will always have a special place in my heart.

FAVOURITE FILM:
Lost In Translation - I saw the movie after my first trip to Tokyo and now every time I watch it, the sounds, colours and scenery remind me of being there. Also the French movie 'Prete-moi ta main' (English title is 'I Do') with Charlotte Gainsbourg, such a funny and charming movie.

5 WARDROBE ESSENTIALS:
A classic trench coat, black ankle boots, a delicate 'show' bra to wear under low cut singlets, a cashmere sweater and a black silk singlet.

ESSENTIAL BEAUTY PRODUCT:
YSL Touche Eclat concealer has helped me hide uninvited pimples and dark circles. Also RMS Living Luminizer is the best and most natural highlighting product on the market in my opinion. I also go through a lot of Kiehls mint lip balm with SPF4.

SOMETHING PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT ME IS:
I was a dancer for 12 years.

IF I COULD ONLY SHOP AT ONE STORE, IT WOULD BE:
Barneys NY - I've only been to the O'Farrell Street one in San Francisco, but I imagine the New York one would be a whole new level of lust.

CURRENTLY LISTENING TO:
I've been sifting back through music I was listening to 6 years ago like Hot Water Music, Turin Brakes and A Tribe Called Quest.

I WANT TO TRAVEL TO:
Oh where to begin! For a city holiday: Stockholm or New York. For a relaxing holiday: Bali, Mykonos, or Corsica.

FAVOURITE QUOTE:
Anxiety is energy without a goal.

TOP 3 FAVOURITE BLOGS & MAGAZINES:

VOGUE IN ROUGE

A crinkled package awaiting at the door, an unknown cover, a new issue filled with glossy, glossy pages.... the excitement of receiving another Vogue in my subscription is like that at Christmas. This month, Vogue Australia's July issue - "The Love Issue" - arrived in all its red and romantic glory. And with one of my favourite directors, Sofia Coppola, adorned on the front {I must say, Vogue Aus is picking some wonderful cover girls at the moment!}. I adored the interview with Coppola -- she seems like such an intelligent and approachable woman.

Paired with my Ruby top, 'Thrill of Brazil' OPI nail polish and Lucas Paw Paw, the rouge theme didn't just stop at Vogue. Evidently I'm all about red at the moment....

From snow-capped mountains to blustering city streets of Wellington -- take a look at what I've been up to recently!

Holidays whisked me from skiing high atop snow-capped mountains to exploring the city of Wellington.... and now, sadly, back to hefty books & classrooms & debates & ink-stained assignments..... sigh! Don't holidays always go far, far too quickly? My three weeks off were so cherished -- first taking me to the frosty, but beautiful, Wanaka.... where the snow was like powdered icing sugar, the views resembled paintings and the skiing down dreamy mountains was far too fun. Then it was off to Wellington, to windswept days ("My hair! My hair!"), to ballet shows & art exhibitions, to a plush hotel room & to the golf club in summer whites.....

More photos, and captions, below! Xxx

1 - A very early good morning from high above snow-capped mountains!
2 - Wandering through an incredible Andy Warhol exhibition
3 - Admiring the picturesque view in Queenstown
4 - On the chairlift up the mountain
5 - Japanese raw tuna salad for lunch at Fukuko
6 - Shoes good enough to eat! Aren't they the sweetest? [Pun intended!]
7 - Pretty store decorations
8 - An ethereal sky - the perks of waking up early!

THE DIAMOND THIEF

Slick in Valentino or cloaked in Dior - the most elegant coats on show à Paris.

"Is she a diamond thief on the run or just a girl in love on the streets of Paris?"
questions T&C.
"The right coat can do that for a woman."

-----------------

Whether one's wrapped in a checkered Dior, cloaked in a black Céline or slick in a patent Valentino - the 'right coat' certainly can transform a woman. From the moment it's shrugged over shoulders and buttons secured.... who knows? You could be a chic Parisian wandering the Champs-Élysées; an editor slipping between shows; or, as the editorial suggests, 'a diamond thief on the run'. From every collar to button to hem, it's elegance - and a new persona - at its best.
